Released 38 years after her death and timed to coincide with her posthumous induction into the 2016 Radio 2 Folk Awards Hall of Fame, I've Always Kept a Unicorn: The Acoustic Sandy Denny is much more than the conveniently-packaged soundtrack for nostalgia and reading (it bears the same title as Mick Houghton's 2015 biography) that it might appear to be.
Granted, there is little here that won't already be in the collection of any dedicated fan -- with the possible exception of three 1971 demos for The Bunch's Rock On -- but where this 40-track compilation really scores is in its drawing together of the best of her solo and acoustic recordings.
The three exclusives -- 'Love's Made a Fool of You' (Buddy Holly/Bob Montgomery), 'When Will I Be Loved' (Phil Everly) and 'Learning the Game' (Buddy Holly) -- aren't, strictly speaking, solo versions: Richard Thompson and Trevor Lucas both contribute guitar parts but Sandy's duet with Linda Thompson on 'When Will I Be Loved' is almost worth the price of admission on its own and is an unexpected highlight.

The first CD opens with the song that many might consider to be one of her very best, even self-defining, compositions, 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes?' -- this is the version she recorded with The Strawbs -- remains one of the best. It's followed by a pair of tunes ('You Never Wanted Me' and 'Milk and Honey') written by the influential Jackson C. Frank.

Sandy's time with Fairport Convention is represented by a total of nine tracks across the two CDs. The first CD contains two demos ('Autopsy' and 'Now and Then') and two acoustic masters ('She Moves Through the Fair' and 'Fotheringay'), while the second disc's contributions are all demos ('The King and Queen of England', 'Rising for the Moon', 'One More Chance', 'Sandy's Song (Take Away the Load)' and 'What Is True'). The demo of 'Autopsy' captures a powerful performance but the sweet multitracked harmonies on 'Now And Then' are another unexpected highlight.

The woefully underrated Fotheringay provide the source of four tracks: two demos ('The Pond and the Stream' and 'Winter Winds') and two live recordings for BBC radio sessions (a gorgeous take on Francis McPeake's evergreen 'Wild Mountain Thyme' and 'The Lowlands of Holland'). While these tracks fit perfectly within the project's brief -- as the PR notes say, to compile "the best album that the late Sandy Denny never made" -- it also means that group performances like 'Nothing More' weren't eligible for inclusion, as it seems that solo versions simply don't exist, as far as we know.

Nevertheless, it's an admirably well-focused collection: more than half of the tracks are undiluted, solo Sandy Denny performances, recovered either from home and studio demos or live sessions and they are unquestionably the heart of the album. The live versions of 'Late November', 'John The Gun', 'No More Sad Refrains' and, especially, 'Solo' are arguably as good as it gets with truly 'solo Sandy' recordings and definite highlights of this collection, primarily for their displays of Sandy's unique phrasing and rare ability to convey such a range and depth of emotion.

The demos of 'Quiet Joys of Brotherhood' (with its accompaniment of what sounds like a harmonium drone), 'No End' and 'One Way Donkey Ride' are equally gripping, underlining the point made by Mick Houghton in his excellent sleeve notes that the emotional intensity of Sandy's live performances was too often lost in the process of recording in the studio.

I've Always Kept A Unicorn: The Acoustic Sandy Denny is a compilation that will be welcomed by anyone who's ever thought, to quote Linda Thompson, "I so wish she had recorded a solo album". Bringing together some of the best material available from such a wide range of sources, it presents Sandy Denny's towering legacy in a way which is both respectful yet revealing. It makes for compelling listening and offers new insights into the creative processes and singular talent of one of Britain's best folk musicians which is sure to appeal to long-time fans and newcomers alike.

On her first studio recording in three years, singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jarosz completes the musical shift that began on 2013's Build Me Up from Bones.
The earlier album, recorded while finishing her studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, explored songwriting outside the norms of contemporary folk, bluegrass, and country.
Undercurrent finds her defining a music built out from American roots traditions, not bound by them.
She wrote or co-wrote all 11 songs --- a first. Another is the album's instrumentation. While her octave mandolin and banjo playing are present, guitar is the dominant instrument here. Now living in New York, Jarosz surrounds herself with familiar collaborators who include I'm with Her bandmates Sara Watkins and Aoife O'Donovan, Luke Reynolds, Parker Millsap, and Jedd Hughes.

The fingerpicked solo acoustic opener "Early Morning Light" commences with the audacious lyric "All my troubles have just begun...." It's a broken love/leaving song that admits regret and doubt, but ultimately refuses anything but forward motion. First single "House of Mercy," with its minor-key, rumbling, low-tuned acoustic guitar and arco bass, is a dark, steely Americana blues. It's a bitter kiss-off tune to a bad-news ex, spiny and forceful: "This house wasn't meant for strangers/But you come knockin' anyway...Underneath that shirt you're wearin'/Strained muscles and a heart of stone...You make me want to be alone...." "Comin' Undone" is a jazzy, rag-tinged shuffle outfitted with a gospelized B-3 and ringing electric six-strings. Lyrically, it offers more optimism than its melancholy title indicates. On the solo acoustic "Take Another Turn," in 6/8 time, Jarosz asks "What does it mean to be hungry/Hungry and hunting and wild...Should you talk to yourself a little more/Push right through that closed door." On "Take Me Back," her protagonist desires a return to solace and refuge but also accepts that nothing last forever, as an electric guitar adds poignant solo fills. "Still Life," driven by a lonesome fiddle, is another broken relationship song. In it she questions settling for less, but refuses, even though it means leaving a beloved who cannot completely surrender to what love demands.

Though darker than her previous albums, Undercurrent is also more resilient. Jarosz reaches through her musical and personal histories with vulnerability and willingness. She comes out on the other side with songs that possess narrative savvy, melodic invention, and a refreshing sense of self-assuredness.

BJ Barham – Rockingham (2016) [Web FLAC]

Country:USA
Year:Aug 19, 2016
Genre:folk,singer/songwriter,folk

American Aquarium front man, founder and lead singer BJ Barham has released his first solo album Rockingham on At The Helm Records.

He has collaborated once again with long-time American Aquarium producer Brad Cook but has lost the electric guitar sound that typified much of the last band album Wolves .

This time we have an introspective, part-autobiographical, acoustic batch of songs that Barham didn t consider appropriate for the full band.

We had the opportunity to chat to BJ on his recent UK mini-tour that showcases this new material, and he explained the background to the new project.

He said that the band were in Belgium when the Paris attacks occurred. The decision was made to move them across to The Netherlands and he found himself holed up in a hotel room for a couple of days whilst the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks unfolded. He decided to use the time to compose a bunch of new songs, eight of which appear on this album.

He accepts that he struggles to write joyful songs and these were penned whilst he was particularly pining for home. The result therefore is a deeply personal group of songs about BJ s home life.

Just don t expect happy!

Home to BJ was Reidsville North Carolina. He currently lives in Raleigh, NC but spends much of his time on the road. He stated to us that he performs in excess of 300 gigs a year, some with his band, and some solo with a guitar and his wife on the merch stand.

Early American Aquarium output often featured stripped back, mainly acoustic songs with gentle piano backing and this is what we have here.

The album opens with American Tobacco Company which tells the story of his father s career working in a tedious job overseeing the production of cigarettes. He did this job for 42 years and the song describes the fact that this is hardly the American Dream . It has a mid-tempo drum beat with Whit Wright s steel guitar giving it an authentic country feel.

To emphasise the personal side to the songs on this album, the sleeve photographs all appear to be from the Barham family album.

Madeline is Barham s father-daughter chat song although he doesn t currently have a daughter. Phil Cook s piano playing is given ample exposure in the mix and adds plenty to a track which is a highlight on the album.

It s also a song that goes its natural distance. Many of BJ s songs stop very suddenly just when another chorus would have been welcome.

Barham states that he excels writing songs about life s downers although his own description of that is not quite as family friendly! We certainly have a few contenders in this category.

Unfortunate Kind is Barham and a guitar. Nothing else. It is as raw and emotive as any song could be that describes the pain of being left alone, after a partnership lasting 39 years is broken by the death of your soul mate. You can hear the emotion in Barham s delivery. It s a subject matter that s been covered numerous times previously by country music performers but he does it well.

The mood lightens with O lover . This merely tells the tale of a farmer with failed crops and an inability to feed his family who decides to carry out an armed robbery.

You can t call yourself a farmer just because you plant a seed you must bargain with the dirt your hands must blister they must bleed . We are assuming that the autobiographical nature of the album should not be taken too literally!

We look on with envy when a songwriter can construct a song around the name of his home town. Reidsville has a name that is made for a country song. This is again a story of hope that turns to dust, and it is a song that creeps up on you with repeated listening just as the good ones do.

The collection ends with Water In The Well which opens with Dear heavenly father what have I done? I used to have it all and now I m left with none. The great state of Georgia took the farm away Because of the bills I could not pay.

The subject matter may be bleak but good country songs are not always intended to provide levity. These are songs that BJ feels that he was meant to sing. They will provide a cornerstone of his one man show and they are his way of showing a little of his private persona.

It s not an album to brighten your day but it is an album that may enhance it. Sometimes it s good to delve outside of your comfort zone.

We fully expect American Aquarium fans to enjoy a return to BJ Barham s traditional country roots but we encourage non-AA fans to check this out. It has a lasting and sincere quality.

Chelle Rose – Blue Ridge Blood (2016) [Web FLAC]

Country:USA
Year:Aug 5, 2016
Genre:folk,americana

Chelle Rose made quite an impact with her self-described Appalachian rock n roll with 2012 s Ghost of Browder Holler. That album had plenty of spit and fire and her voice left an indelible impression because it may have been the first time we heard a female mountain voice singing raw, unadulterated rock n roll. Okay, it s more on the roots side of the scale, but nonetheless it went down like straight whiskey.

Rose s back with a stronger set of songs, following years of struggling with an undiagnosed thyroid disease that s been finally identified and treated. Despite the success of her record, Rose felt that her short-lived career was over. As Rose puts it, I started turning down gigs and makin excuses. I was in bed for almost two years. And I didn t tell anybody. I didn t want anybody to know. Finally, my best friend said, You need to get some blood work. There s something really wrong. She s done that, she s newly engaged, reinvigorated and in a cathartic way, has channeled much of her past pain into these songs, which are every bit as dark as those on her previous album. Yet, the album, unlike its predecessor, seems more upbeat than angry.

Bassist George Reiff sat in the producer chair, overseeing sessions recorded in Austin, with musicians Sergio Webb (guitars), Rick Richards (drums), Billy Cassis (guitars), Johnathan Letner (mandolin), and Bukka Allen (keys). Buddy Miller duets with Rose on the title track.

Rose alternates between dark tales and sweet memories that revolve around her extended family in these 11 self-penned tunes. This family comes from both sides of the mountain East Tennessee and North Carolina, but she points to her paternal side, a long line of South Knoxville musicians, for her musical talent. Having moved to Nashville in 1996, she divorced in 2008 and relocated to Leiper s Fork, TN, the basis for the tune Hidin Hole . The album is dedicated to her maternal grandmother who raised her and passed away just two years ago. She nods to her in the title track where Buddy Miller s harmonies float over Sergio Webb s stellar dobro playing. You hear the theme of Blue Ridge Blood in Mean Grandpappy, a man who according to Rose had no tears shed for him at his funeral. Bitter defiance comes forth in Dammit Darlin and Not Your Girl . Other tunes touch on mortality, vivid characters, trains and misplaced love. It s all done in Rose s singular raw, honest approach where a vulnerable perspective emerges from the toughness every so often too.

FLAC/Lossless/WEB
Label/Cat#: Shoogle Records
Country:UK
Year:2016
Genre:folk

In 2014 Kaela Rowan released her first solo album, Menagerie, a dreamy, imaginative and compelling exploration of traditional and contemporary themes, showcasing the unique vocals that Kaela has previously provided for Mouth Music, The Bevvy Sisters and, more recently, on Shooglenifty s The Untied Knot (read our review here).

In her second solo album, The Fruited Thorn, Kaela charts an unexpected course by turning to the traditional songs that inspired her as a young singer in Lochaber. Developing arrangements and co-producing the album with her partner James MacKenzie (Percussion, Guitars, Keyboard, Programming, Vocals) and with core collaborator Ewan MacPherson (Guitars, Mandolin, Jaw Harp), both of Shooglenifty, Kaela has gathered an impressive band of contributors for a collection of eleven songs that not only pay homage to those centuries of influence, but also confirm Kaela s reputation for craft and originality.

Recording traditional material is by no means playing it safe, and it s a brave soul that takes on Robert Burns Now Westlin Winds since Dick Gaughan made it his own. Braver still to open an album with it. With a light as air guitar and fiddle opening, and amid Dave Milligan s beautifully understated piano, Kaela s trembling vocal breathes its way through Burns exquisite poetry towards a moment of sheer magic

Michael McDermott – Willow Springs (2016) [Web FLAC]

FLAC/Lossless/WEB
Label/Cat#:Pauper Sky Records
Country:USA
Year:June 17, 2016
Genre:folk,singer/songwriter

You won t have to visit veteran singer-songwriter Michael McDermott s home in the titular town to know he has a pretty substantial collection of Dylan, Mellencamp and Springsteen CDs. On his 10th album in a 25-year career, the recently clean and sober McDermott pays tribute to those influences, and others, by wrapping this entire folk-rock (emphasis on the former) release around those sources.

There s nothing wrong with that of course; half the artists in his field have similar musical references, and McDermott has strong enough melodic and especially lyrical talents to carve out a distinctive niche, especially as this album moves into its second half.

McDermott has a lot to say, and uses these songs to say it. His plentiful, often colorful words enliven these topics, whether it s about starting over with a new love ( Let a Little Light In ), reflecting on old personal demons, now hopefully behind him ( Half Empty Kind of Guy ) or spinning a tale of a loser on the run from the law in the very Springsteen-ish right down to its title Getaway Car. Occasionally he gets caught up in his own artful alliteration for alliteration s sake in the title track where he talks his way through Pimps and pushers, presidents/ the paupers preach of tenements like he s aiming to prove he can one-up Dylan at his own game.

There isn t much comic relief, but McDermott displays dry humor on the sly Folksinger where he uses his own occupation ( I don t want to be a folksinger anymore/ think I ll write me a big hit song and be loved and adored/ I ll have handlers and groupies and hell you know what that s for ) as a metaphor for soldiers, Christians and gravediggers who may also question their professions. Some tunes like the seven-minute Shadow in the Window, a story song likely about the recent death of his father, are touching, ruminative and almost painfully introspective.

The crisp, predominantly acoustic instrumentation enhanced by such well-known industry names as Will Kimbrough (Willie Sugarcapps) and keyboardist John Deaderick (Don Henley) along with McDermott s own production emphasizes his voice and words, perhaps to the detriment of melodies that often seem like vessels to contain them. That said, McDermott s obvious love of craft, and refusal to either sell out or commercialize his rootsy sound after all these years is commendable. And even if he s not pushing the boundaries of his genre, this album makes you appreciate his talents and root for him to succeed in an industry that hasn t shown much love for his output in the past quarter century of trying.

My Girl The River – This Aint No Fairytale (2016) [Web FLAC]

FLAC / Lossless / WEB
Label/Cat#:Super Tiny Records
Country:USA
Year: 2016
Format:WEB
Genre:americana,folk

My Girl The River's fabulous debut album, This Aint No Fairytale, is a lovely melange of Americana-Roots music. Kris Wilkinson Hughes developed the project. Hughes, indigenous to Louisiana and a former resident of the epicenter of roots music, Nashville, seems to revel in writing songs about the southern United States. Songs like Come Back To Nashville and Covington bring to mind works by other fellow alt-country musicians Jason Isbell and Lucinda Williams. These tracks, although enjoyable in every setting, feel like they would be best appropriate for road trips across the Great American interstates and byways.

Although the record feels about as American as apple pie, Kris s husband and bassist on the album, Joe, is a native of the United Kingdom. The Hughes have been residents of Bedford, England for approximately 18 years, and although they live very far away from Nashville and Covington, Louisiana, all of these songs still feel very deep rooted in the customs and traditions of southern Americana. Clearly the upbringing and early life of Kris in the south had a major weight on her, as every song is distinctly all-American.

This Ain t No Fairytale has an array of great songs. One of the standouts is the fantastic Woods Behind Our House. With a roots-based acoustic feel, this song is also the first single from the album. It demonstrates very well the knack that My Girl The River has for exceptional songwriting. Another knockout is Come Back to Nashville, reflecting Kris s love and nostalgia for the Music City.

It is important to note that while Kris is the frontwoman for the group, her husband Joe is the primary songwriter behind this project. Joe is also a successful songwriter in his own right, and even co-wrote the Annie Lennox smash hit, No More I Love You s. Kris and Joe are a pair to be reckoned with.

The album s conclusion The Last Song was actually the first song written for the project. This is the perfect way to close the album, and leave the listener hooked for the next entry in My Girl The River s catalogue. With This Ain t No Fairytale, one can only hope that we don t have long to wait until the next chapter in their saga. Overall, this debut album s title reigns true. While this record may not be a fairytale, it will become something that is just as celebrated over the years to come.

Belinda O Hooley and Heidi Tidow are the contemporary English answer to the remarkable Canadian duo of Anna McGarrigle and her late sister, Kate. They sing together with the ease of a married couple, matching delicate and increasingly brave harmony vocals against O Hooley s thoughtful piano work. And they are exceptional songwriters, as they prove with this unusual set. They tackle English racism, cheap labour and confused voters in the poignant Made in England, written long before Brexit. Then there are songs about vulnerability, including a children s hymn from 1900, now reworked as a bleak, threatening commentary on the church and child abuse, and a charming, epic love song inspired by orphaned elephants in Kenya. Then they add a tribute to the woman who helped the recovery of shell-shocked first world war troops by teaching them Morris dancing, and an exquisite treatment of Joni Mitchell s River.

Country:USA
Year: Jun 17, 2016
Genre:indie folk/rock

Singer and songwriter Anthony D'Amato sounds like a folkie at heart on his second album for New West, 2016's Cold Snap. But he has just enough in the way of rock & roll instincts to promise to give his beloved two of his Tom Petty albums. (Hey, plenty of guys have gotten farther on gifts with less lasting value.) D'Amato also had the good sense to hire Mike Mogis to produce Cold Snap, and while Mogis doesn't mess with the heart of D'Amato's songs, he gives this music a healthy dose of energy and punch. On primarily acoustic numbers like "A Kick in the Teeth," "Honey, That's Not All," and "Once," D'Amato's songs sound warm and literate, but also more than a bit monochromatic, and their melodic similarity doesn't say much for his way with music. But when Mogis pairs D'Amato with a studio band that includes members of Cursive and the Faint (as well as Mr. Bright Eyes himself, Connor Oberst, on backing vocals), the tunes come to life with a freewheeling bounce that not only perks up the melodies but adds some snap and spice to D'Amato's wordplay en route. When Cold Snap heats up, D'Amato and his crew bring a depth and color to this music that fuses vintage folk-rock with '70s East Coast rock & roll, with big drums straight out of a classic Phil Spector session. On his own, D'Amato is a good but not quite outstanding singer and songwriter. With the right band, he turns out to be something special, and Cold Snap gives him just enough of a rock & roll kick to make this album smart, fun, and worthy of investigation.

Ben Bedford – The Pilot and the Flying Machine (2016) Web FLAC

FLAC/Lossless/WEB
Label/Cat#:Waterbug Records
Country:USA
Year: Apr 11, 2016
Genre:singer/songwriter,folk

With the release of his fourth album, The Pilot and the Flying Machine , Ben Bedford takes the listener on a philosophical, poetic, and powerful sonic flight. With his songwriting as erudite as ever and his guitar playing further honed and refined, Bedford enters decidedly new territory in terms of themes, sound, and arrangement with this album. While his tried and true singer songwriter influences, such as Townes Van Zandt and Patty Griffin, are here, this album owes as much in inspiration to the piano playing of Vladimir Horowitz and Thelonious Monk, the theatrical songwriting of Kate Bush, and the open sounding jazz and classical recordings of the late 1950s. The title tracks (there are two) were inspired by the sculptures of the internationally known Springfield, Illinois artist Michael A. Dunbar. Dunbar s work, often reminiscent of navigational instruments in their beauty, grace and functional appearance, was the catalyst for the flight/journey motif that runs throughout the songs. The title tracks both touch upon doubt, regret, and hope and encapsulate the implicit and intimate conversation between a pilot and his/her craft. In manyways this is Bedford s most personal album and in a figurative sense, he is the pilot in the flying machine, maneuvering, swooping, and plummeting through his experience.

Other songs include, Blood on Missouri which recounts the events surrounding Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 and the journey the United States has taken in the past two years of reawakening to the reality that the civil rights movement of the 1960s is incomplete. Letters from the Earth is a rolling traversal across the Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois plains with themes of worry, reminiscence, and incredulity . Even the fast paced instrumental Orrery insinuates the flight/journey theme, as an orrery is a 3 dimensional moving model of the solar system. Rather than record in a studio, Bedford opted for the open sound and acoustics of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church in Springfield, Illinois during January 4 8. He assembled a group of people who could help him achieve his musical vision and the live and open sounding recording that he hoped to capture. Nashville engineer David Sinko traveled to record the project (Punch Brothers, YoYo Ma and Edgar Meyer). Diederik van Wassenaer, who has toured with Bedford for the last two years, added his haunting violin and viola. Ethan Jodziewicz, who studied under Edgar Meyer, was tapped to play double bass. Kari Bedford, Ben s wife, adds her signature harmony vocals. The combination of musicians and engineering within that acoustic space has created a unique folk/americana album with overtones of classical chamber music.

A true son of the heartland, Bedford dips into the deep inkwell of classic American literature and writes with the old soul quality of his literary idols, such as John Steinbeck and Toni Morrison.

Country:USA
Year: June 4, 2015
Genre:Folk,blues

The Ivas John Band s longtime lineup consists of Ivas John on guitar and vocals, accompanied by Jamie Pender on bass guitar, Shannon Meyer on guitar, and Charlie Morrill on drums. Frontman and songwriter John was born in Chicago, but has lived in Southern Illinois since his teens. Forging a blues/jazz/honkytonk sound that varies audibly in influence from one song to the next, but which has been compared to the likes of Keb Mo , Van Morrison, and Mose Allison, John and his band have played more than one-thousand shows together around the Midwest.

The new album, Good Days a Comin , is John s fifth full-length offering, but his first that is all-acoustic, and on it, he s up to some other new tricks. John has ditched the piano he s sometimes featured in the past; instead you ll hear fiddle, dobro, and mandolin on Good Days a Comin , along with upright bass and snare drum.

Its sound is more traditional than his previous work. John described it to Nightlife as folk, country blues, and bluegrass music with a high polish. These old and truly American musical styles are, he says, a deep well to draw from.

John also has new collaborators. Appearing on the album are husband-and-wife folk duo the Gordons, as well as Robert Bowlin, Tim Crouch, David Davis, and Ross Sermons, who John describes as perhaps Tasmania s greatest standup bass player, with whom he communicated and recorded by Skype. John speaks positively of the recording process. Being the youngest player on it by twenty-five years, I certainly learned a lot, he says.

All of the songs are original written by John or cowritten with his father, musician Edward John except for nods to folk, bluegrass, and country greats Doc Watson, Tom Paxton, John Hartford, and Merle Travis

Artist: Jewel
Title: Picking Up The Pieces
Genre: Folk
Release Date: 2015
Label: Concord Sugar Hill
Duration: 01:02:36
Quality: FLAC 48kHz/24bit
Source: HDTracks

Picking Up the Pieces is Jewel's 14-track LP through Sugar Hill Records. She self-produced the record -- with her first producer, the late Ben Keith, always in mind -- and hired a band comprised mostly of Neil Young collaborators to help her strip away the veneer she'd built up over two decades in the music business.

"This is just me. These are my thoughts. These are my feelings. This is my poetry," Jewel said. "It really felt like returning to a part of me that I didn't mean to lose, but with time and relationships and life and surviving and dealing, you take on new things and not all of them are great."

The last five years have been full of change, both personal and creative, for the 41-year-old Alaska-born singer. Her 4-year-old son Kase was born, but her marriage fell apart. She wrote her memoir, Never Broken, and recorded a pair of children's albums. Picking Up the Pieces captures some of these moments on "Love Used to Be" and "Mercy," but also gathers longtime unrecorded live favorites like "Carnivore" and "Boy Needs a Bike." The album also includes "My Father's Daughter," a stunning autobiographical collaboration with Dolly Parton.

"I was trying to keep my mind quiet and honestly get back to something I feel like I'd lost touch with in my life. It was really an exercise in shutting out fear. I was giving myself permission to be exactly who and what I was."

Picking Up the Pieces contains a not-so-subtle allusion to the title of Jewel's 1995 debut Pieces of You. Twenty years later, the singer/songwriter is acknowledging how she's strayed from the folky fragility of her beginnings and is now ready to reconnect with her roots, going so far as to sign with folk label Sugar Hill for Picking Up the Pieces. Over the course of this hour-long effort, Jewel does find some space for guests --- Rodney Crowell shows up on "It Doesn't Hurt Right Now," Dolly Parton on "My Father's Daughter" --- and there are gentle accouterments like moaning sitars, full rhythm sections, and gliding pianos, all arrangements that are felt more than heard. Despite these gentle touches, Picking Up the Pieces feels unadorned but not necessarily simple. Often, it's possible to feel the weight of the two decades dividing Pieces of You and Picking Up the Pieces, usually in the loss of Jewel's naivete. On her debut, she felt youthful and instinctive, but on this, her 12th album, she relies on craft, sculpting the songs so they recall a younger version of her. This tactic has its drawbacks --- usually lyrical, with the "you like to read scientific magazines like Vanity Fair/there was a well-written article about serotonin in there" on the sweetly cynical "Plain Jane" typifying her heavy-handed touch --- but melodically she's a stronger writer now than she was then and a better recordmaker, too. All those nave rough edges were ingratiating on Pieces of You, but they'd seem affected on a mature Jewel, so her decision to return to the form but not the sensibility of her earlier music is what makes Picking Up the Pieces a successful neo-comeback. --AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Amos Lee – Spirit (2016) [Web FLAC]

Country:USA
Year:19 August 2016
Genre:folk

Amos Lee has explained that he wrote the title track for his newest release after being moved by a New Orleans street singer he encountered. The singer, who had been performing to no one in particular, had a deep connection with his music and passed it on to his one-man audience. Spirit exudes that feeling of connection. It s not that Lee ever veered too far from the sort of honest, intimate songwriting that marked his earliest work, but perhaps he needed a bit of a reboot. These songs are raw and open; they touch a nerve. There s a fervor to the performances, a realism in the stories. Vaporize, one of the first tracks released from the album, is enveloping, its soul/gospel buoyancy anathema to the heartbreak expressed: I can t seem to find a little piece of mind, Lee sings. I guess I ll just vaporize everything that s inside. A more expansive production stacked vocals, Lee s and Luther Dickinson s Southern-fried guitars, keyboard colorings dominates Highways and Clouds, but what might be just a road song in other hands becomes a voyage into the unknown in Lee s. But sometimes it s all just alright: Oh I ll sing for you/ What more can I do/ Oh I ll sing for you, Lee offers in the mostly acoustic One Lonely Night, and you re more than happy to take him up on his offer.

This York singer-songwriter has been through a lot since his 2011 debut, Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm. He lost his father to cancer, and spent a dark period holed up in his late parent s old house, trying to destroy himself. This has all had an impact on his second album, but the songs are more about renewal after turbulence than wallowing in despair. The atmosphere is hushed and hymnal: the 26-year old s almost-whispered vocals and gently plucked guitar glide over softly pattering drums and occasional electronics. It just about avoids becoming cloying: give them time, and these songs seep in like damp in an old building never more so than the beautifully ethereal Groves, which begins at his father s deathbed and turns into a humbling tribute. After the Rain certainly has flaws, but Leftwich has created a fragile, precious, oddly comforting thing.
